Earlier this summer, Senator John McCain was diagnosed with primary glioblastoma, a type of brain tumor, and has undergone surgery to have the aggressive tumor removed. What can we learn from John McCain’s brain tumor? Are you or your family members at risk for this type of tumor or inflammation? Let’s explore the symptoms, causes, and early detection of John McCain’s brain tumor
First, the basics: What is glioblastoma? Glioblastoma, sometimes referred to as glioblastoma multiforme, is an aggressive type of brain cancer that stems from the brain; it does not start somewhere else in the body and spread to the brain. Treatment involves surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, depending on the case.
Symptoms of primary glioblastoma can include constant headaches, seizures, vomiting, trouble thinking, changes in mood or personality, double or blurred vision and difficulty speaking. The tumor is diagnosed by a neurological exam and imaging tests, usually an MRI, CT or PET scan.
No one can say exactly what causes these tumors, but there are risk factors to take into consideration. One of these risk factors is your age. Your risk of a brain tumor increases as you age, but can happen at any time in your life. Another risk is exposure to a type of radiation called ionizing radiation, which is radiation therapy used to treat cancer. One more risk that is not addressed as much as it should be is the food we put into our bodies. If you consume foods with little to no nutritional value, which lack the vitamins and minerals your body needs to thrive, you’re putting yourself at a high risk. Certain foods can be causing inflammation which makes probability higher for tumors and inflammation (gluten, dairy, egg, soy, peanut, sugar).
Early signs of this tumors or inflammation in blood-work, can be elevated c-reactive protein, high fibrinogen, high homocysteine, suddenly elevated cholesterol, all detected through a comprehensive blood test. You can learn more about this test here.
You may want to also consider getting food intolerance testing done so YOU learn which foods may be leading to inflammation and unnecessary health challenges for you. To find out more about our Food Allergy Test Kit, please click here.
We wish you and the senator nothing but good health and wellness today and in the future!
