To eat coconut or not to eat coconut…………that is the question. Here is some helpful information to help YOU be the judge regarding the coconut debate.

The Facts:
Yes the news from the American Heart Association sounds alarming to many, but it isn’t not telling you the whole story. The AHA is suggesting that average man limit their daily saturated fat intake to 30 grams per day and for women, 20 grams. That is actually equal to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil for men and 1.33 tablespoons for women.

Coconut oil and cholesterol: Yes it can raise LDL, BUT it can also raise HDL which is the GOOD cholesterol! And because it helps people to LOSE WEIGHT, it has added benefits as helping people get rid of the fat around their waists which helps improve heart health.

Inflammation is the main cause of heart disease, not high cholesterol: Most studies are focused on the negativity of cholesterol, I wish they would focus on the dangers of high inflammation and how that leads to disease and death. We check for lipid levels here, but we also make sure to check inflammation levels like c-reactive protein, fibrinogen and homocysteine which if high, can be dangerous to the heart and to the body.

Why no greens? The AHA suggested people eat more corn and soy oil. These are 90% genetically modified and soy contains glyphosate (roundup) which can cause gluten intolerance and inflammation. Why did they not suggest a more GREEN based diet?

Coconut can help with energy, heart health and is immune supportive!
The fat in coconut oil is 65% is medium-chain fatty acids, and this fat is metabolized differently than long-chain fatty acids. Medium chain fatty acids are absorbed and shuttled directly to the liver, where they are oxidized (burned) for energy. Medium-chain fatty acids help lower the risk of both atherosclerosis and heart disease. It is primarily due to the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil that makes it so special and so beneficial.

Half of the medium – chain fatty acids found in a coconut is Lauric acid, which tends to be antiviral and anti fungal which makes it immune supportive. Lauric acid is even found in breast milk and infants convert it to monolaurin which protects them from getting sick.

Coconut oil has MCT (Medium Chain Triglycerides) to help you LOSE BELLY FAT!
Let’s face it folks, too many people in our country are overweight, the belly fat never seems to stop. The thing with these medium chain fatty acids, is that they are metabolized differently than the longer chain fats. They are sent straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are either used for energy right away or turned into ketone bodies. The BOTTOM LINE is that MCT oil can lead to benefits on our metabolism and thus assist with weight loss!

So here you go, our coconut oil story, you be the judge.
