Are your cortisol levels top-notch or nope? If not, a cortisol test can help you know when Cortisol is dipping and what time of the day is best for cortisol support.
Cortisol helps our adrenal glands produce energy for our daily life and stresses. Right before I go to work out in the mornings, my cortisol levels are high, exactly where they should be. I tend to jump out of bed and am ready to start my busy day. But not everyone is like that, and I was not always perky in the morning.
When there is an illness, life stress, a difficult work situation, a family problem, the list goes on and on; our cortisol levels tend to drop and feel like dropping too. After a while of “adrenal burnout,“ our body cannot seem to find the Cortisol we once had to keep us moving with energy during our busy day.
Cortisol levels can also start high and then drop suddenly in the middle of the day. When this happens, many people notice their mood and focus drop too. It is fascinating how Cortisol can affect our physical and mental well-being.
When Cortisol levels work best for us, Cortisol is highest in the morning. It tapers off slowly throughout the day, kind of like a slow-release energy pill that wears off just in time for bed.
There are “high” cortisol issues too. For women especially that have trouble with acne or weight, Cortisol, which is the stress hormone, may be elevated. And if there are constant anxiety issues or mind spinning, that may also indicate an elevated cortisol level. High Cortisol contributes to a host of problems such as insomnia, stress tolerance, headaches, dizziness, hunger, and belly fat, aka “cortisol baby,”
For many Type A personalities, our Cortisol is fine during the day but jumps up at night when we try to shut our minds off and go to sleep.
So how do you find out how your cortisol levels are? The answer is a simple cortisol saliva test that can be collected via saliva. It tests your cortisol level in the morning, noon, mid-afternoon, and bedtime. It is crucial to know IF Cortisol is dropping and at what time. There are certain nutrients we may suggest in our protocol based on the time of the drop. Plus, we can guide you on sleeping better if Cortisol keeps you awake at night.
