Diarrhea By Alane Stieglitz, ND, CNC

Can we get real for a moment and discuss what causes diarrhea?  Gut health is such a private thing for many. Some people get all backed up and constipated that they feel so full and bloated most of the time. Other people suffer from diarrhea, and they are usually looking for the nearest bathroom, just in case. Worrying about how your stomach will be, is no way to live! There are simple causes and solutions for diarrhea.

Yes, I do understand how you feel. My symptoms started in 5th grade and lasted until my mid-30s, when I finally figured my gut out. Sometimes I was so constipated that I would only poop once a week. I had to cancel trips, dates or plans other times due to a sudden uh oh feeling or the exhaustion of diarrhea. But that was my PAST, and it can be your PAST too!

Seriously, my stomach would get upset at a moment’s notice, and diarrhea would start. I was not a happy camper. I remember senior prom; I was so excited to go, but to feel safe, I starved myself 48 hours prior and refused to eat during the prom for fear of getting sick. If a road trip was planned, I would not eat for 24 hours before each day in the car. I was a pretty thin young girl, too thin.

Once I figured out what causes diarrhea and what my gut was trying to teach me, I fixed the issue once and for good. It never happened again. And that is a great big YAY.

Want to do what I did to feel better?

First, let’s discuss food. Did you know that the food you are eating may be the #1 cause AND the solution of your diarrhea? For me, the main culprit was gluten, and the 2nd was dairy. But to my surprise, with food intolerance testing, other foods, even healthy foods, were also the causes of my gut symptoms. I have seen test results show up lettuce, corn, beef, chicken, nuts, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, salad, etc. And the food intolerance results are different for everyone. I DON’T HAVE DIARRHEA when I eat corn or beef, but I do feel bloated and look like I gained 10 pounds overnight.

Second, let’s discuss what is in the gut. I went the traditional route for most of my childhood, teen years, and young adult years. I even took a few medications to stop diarrhea symptoms. But as I got older and learned about getting to the root cause of things to find the best solution, I changed my ways. I ran a very comprehensive stool test to know what was upsetting my stomach and what was inside it that wasn’t supposed to be there. I had a nasty bacteria overgrowth and candida. No parasites, YAY, but I still had to fix my gut.

For instance, maybe there is a nasty bacteria in your gut, perhaps there is a parasite, leaky gut, or perhaps you merely lack good bacteria. Many times I see harmful bacteria levels high and good bacteria levels low in test results. Sometimes there is a leaky gut, and other times the solution is to take digestive enzymes. But I am not about guessing; life is too short. I want to get people the answers they want and the correct answers and support for their symptoms.

Diarrhea can get under control so you can stop worrying about your gut and what it is doing to your life. Being active again was worth adjusting my diet and fixing my gut health.
