Diet drinks and diet sodas are calorie-free, so they should help you lose weight. Sorry but ……Wrong!!!

When you see what sugar-free diet soft drinks do to you on a hormonal level, you’ll know that diet drinks can set the stage for even quicker weight gain!

It makes sense that swapping out sugar for a no-calorie sweet-tasting chemical doesn’t have the same effects as said sugar does on your waistline. The downside of these chemicals, such as aspartame, is that your body cannot recognize them, and adverse effects occur.

Aspartame breaks down to phenylalanine in the body. Phenylalanine interferes with intestinal alkaline phosphatase, which helps prevent diabetes and metabolic syndrome. In a very short time, a glucose intolerance can develop.

What you eat today affects the makeup of your microbial biome makeup.

To further appreciate how complicated our handling of diet soda like diet coke or diet Pepsi can be, here’s another little example:

Our intestine (or bowel) is covered with cells that secrete hormones. These cells react to the presence and composition of food by secreting peptides that work on the brain, signal satiety, and control glucose by influencing insulin secretion. Guess what: Artificial sweeteners in diet drinks seem to the body the way real food does.

Artificial sweeteners are associated with a drop in the appetite-regulating hormone leptin. Leptin is the hormone that inhibits hunger, so diet drinks can make you hungry and less satisfied with reasonable amounts of food.

And when you drink chemicals that your body cannot break down, your body makes fat and wraps it around the chemicals to keep them away from your vital organs. If you are struggling with weight loss, diet drinks need to be tossed out.

Most diet sodas have no calories and no recognized ingredients. They are a cocktail of chemicals that encourage your body to gain and store fat, especially on your legs and bottom, away from your organs.

Chronic consumption of aspartame can lead to potentially harmful side effects on your body. The long-term effects on humans are still not specific. However, recent studies in animals prove its damaging effects, especially on the brain. Years ago, I had a patient with M.S. that I could not get better. He was in a wheelchair. The reason I could not help him is he refused to give up his diet drinks. I will never forget his unwillingness to improve his quality of life by giving up one thing.

There are two ways to see if your body is storing fat.

1) Hormone saliva testing will show you if hormones are being stored in large amounts of fat cells. Excess hormone build-up does not show up in the blood, only in the saliva.

2) Comprehensive blood work thoroughly looks at the thyroid gland, leptin, insulin, inflammation levels, ferritin, and more. The higher the inflammation levels, the higher the fat storage, usually. Plus, if the thyroid is sluggish, that makes weight loss almost impossible.

Other diet drinks options are sparkling water and carbonated water, but make sure the sweeteners are stevia or monk fruit.
