Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is a condition that occurs when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland causing all kinds of uncomfortable symptoms. Research shows that the cause may be genetic. Usually someone in the family has Hashimoto‘s or another type of autoimmune disease. Hashimoto’s is linked to sex hormones, and for some reason, more women get diagnosed than men with this disease. Also, more women have thyroid issues about a year after giving birth and about 20% of those women will develop Hashimoto’s later on in life. Both Alane and Maria are 2 of the many women who have been diagnosed with hypothyroid and Hashimoto’s! For some reason, iodine is one of the first treatments that people want to recommend. I (Maria) had two people tell me that I should take iodine for my thyroid. A few summers ago, after feeling completely miserable from my typical thyroid symptoms, I decided that I would give iodine a chance. Too my surprise my thyroid numbers doubled for the worse! Oh, how I wished I knew what I know now back then! To answer the question, “Should I take iodine if I have Hashimoto’s?” the answer is “NO.”
Iodine has been an excellent therapy for certain conditions such as breast and uterine fibroid s, and even breast cancer, but it does not help with Hashimoto’s. One of the leading experts in thyroid and Hashimoto’s disease is Dr. Datis Kharrazian, explains that iodine stimulates the activity of the thyroid peroxidase (TPO) enzyme, which triggers thyroid hormone production. That may not sound too bad but Dr. Kharrazian suggests that TPO stimulation from iodine in Hashimoto’s will cause an aggressive attack against the thyroid gland which triggers a whole bunch of symptoms. Once I started reading Dr. Kharrazian’s articles and books, I felt like I was reading exerts from my own experiences through the testimonies of others that he shared.
