I’ll take mine black, please, and that is tea, not coffee. There are so many tea benefits regarding health, wellness, and gut health.
When you wake up on a chilly fall morning, what’s the first thing you reach for to cut the chill? There’s little that warms body and soul quite like a hot drink. But new research shows that what you choose to put in your mug may have a significant impact not just on how warm you feel but also on how good you feel. The hot new drink (get it?) isn’t coffee, but black tea for the health-conscious. It turns out; black tea benefits are many, including promoting weight loss.
Here’s the scoop: Researchers at UCLA recently showed that black tea alters bacteria levels and in the gut. In the study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, they found that, in mice, black tea alters the amounts of bacteria in the intestines and the kind. After consuming black tea, the percentage of bacteria associated with obesity went down. Wow, one of the black tea benefits is fat loss! Meanwhile, bacteria linked to lean body mass increased. That change has a massive implication for overall health. The findings suggest that black tea acts as a pre-biotic, nourishing good bacteria and may help those who wish to lose weight and enjoy the other health benefits of good gut health.
True story: Just this year, I did some thinking about coffee and weight. My office manager came into the clinic one day and said he was quitting coffee 100%. He was a real coffee lover. Well, I thought about it and said, why not give the tea a try? I know there are many tea benefits, so I wanted to see if anything in my health changed, including my weight. In just a few weeks, I dropped 10 pounds. I felt less swollen, and my stomach was flatter. Not bad, or yes bad. I was buying organic, low acidic coffee, but even that wasn’t okay for me. Tea benefits indeed did override my coffee. So, now I am a vivid tea drinker, and I enjoy a cup of chilled or hot tea every day.
More on tea benefits and gut health: The research found means black tea may be right up there with garlic, sauerkraut, probiotics, onions, dandelion greens, and bananas as a natural protection for the good stuff living in your gut. So the next time that barista or waitress asks what you want in your mug, drop the coffee and tell her you’ll take black tea!
