Vitamin D3 is the stronger form of vitamin D. You get D3 from sunshine, eating fish, and taking cod liver oil. D2 is derived from plants. D2 was developed in the early 1920s through ultraviolet exposure of foods. The process was patented and licensed to pharmaceutical companies, which started the prescriptions being written for vitamin D2.
Despite all the evidence that shows that D3 is the better choice, the form of vitamin D that is used primarily in pharmaceutical prescriptions in North America is still vitamin D2, not D3. But one of the most popular pharmaceutical companies in Europe changed their vitamin D prescriptions to vitamin D3. Overall evidence has shown that D2 is 1/10 as effective as D3.
