Vitamin Deficiency….is Your Multi Vitamin Working?
We’ve all heard the back and forth chatter on our multi-vitamins. Some say you must take the liquid form and others say is this vitamin safe or filled with synthetic ingredients? Further, are the amounts of vitamins and minerals in this particular vitamin enough to satisfy my bodies needs?
When you only take a multivitamin odds are there will be 1, 2 or more nutrients you need more of, and there isn’t enough in the multivitamin you bought. And if you try to decide on your own which extra vitamins you need, without an actual test odds are you will guess incorrectly. Take for example vitamins B12, folate, and D. Do you have a vitamin deficiency in regards to these vitamins and not know it? This is a concerning question. Some people need higher levels of these vitamins for better health, and others do not.
“It’s estimated that somewhere between 1.5 percent to 15 percent of the general American population is vitamin B12 deficient, and your chances of being deficient only increase as you age”. “Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms can include depression, confusion, poor memory, balance problems, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, and more”(1).
When is the last time that folate crossed your mind? Do you have a vitamin deficiency in folate? Folate primarily helps the body make new cells, specifically by playing a role in copying and synthesizing DNA. “A folate deficiency will cause anemia (poorly formed red blood cells), poor immune function, and poor digestion” (2). And when the harmful protein called homocysteine is elevated in bloodwork, that is an indicator of a folate deficiency or the MTHFR genetic deficiency.
Up to 90 percent of adults in the United States — is believed to have a vitamin D deficiency. People with a vitamin deficiency in D “are at an increased risk of developing health complications and conditions like cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, various types of cancer, immune disorders and adverse pregnancy outcomes”(3). Most people believe a little sunshine will give you all the D you need, that is not the case anymore. Even people out in sunny states test low in vitamin D.
