What Can Hair Follicle Testing Show You?

A hair follicle is a part of the skin, which grows a hair by packing old cells together. Attached inside the top of the follicle are sebaceous glands, which are tiny sebum-producing producing glands in almost all skin except on the palms, lips and soles of the feet. The thicker the hair, the more the number of sebaceous glands there are.

Hair is the second most metabolically active tissue in the body. The hair is affected by the blood, hormones, enzymes, the environment, genetics, perspiration, and more! The main thing people look for in a hair follicle test is mineral and metal levels. Minerals are the basis for all life – and minerals in the body have an effect on every other mineral in the body. As such, these minerals need to be balanced with each other in order for your body to be at its optimum. When you are deficient in one mineral, it can cause other minerals to no longer be in check and reach higher levels leading to mineral toxicity. There is also a possibility that mineral levels show up high on a hair follicle test when there is a toxic load of metals. Take calcium for example, a person can have calcium deficiency symptoms but when they do a hair follicle test their calcium is actually too high. This shows that the body is not utilizing calcium properly due to metal toxicity.

Hair follicles show a timeline of a person’s health history. Another common way to test for minerals or metals is in blood tests, but we believe that these are much less efficient than hair tests. The role of blood is to transport things throughout the body (oxygen, minerals, etc.) so testing it only shows us what is currently being transported. Hair, however, can show us what is currently being stored by the body which gives us a more accurate picture of what is being stored in the organs and tissues.
