Let’s talk microbiome balance. What’s that you ask? (Me too when I first started looking into all the issues that could be causing my brother issues.   See, my brother Michael has down syndrome and he can’t always tell me what’s going on, so I’ve done A LOT of investigating…which led me to Alane.)

By definition:
the microorganisms in a particular environment (including the body or a part of the body).”
“we depend on a vast army of microbes to stay alive: a microbiome that protects us against germs, breaks down food to release energy, and produces vitamins.”

Why would a “gum”, that may hurt your gut, be included in an everyday food product we buy at the store?  Most of us don’t even know it unless you read the food labels, but it is a very COMMON additive.  Most often they are included as an emulsifying agent, stabilizing agent or in the case of gluten free foods it acts as a thickening agent. Types of gums include:

Xanthan
Locust Bean
Carrageenan
Carob Bean
Cellulose
Alginate
Guar

You would be surprised;  these gut hurting “gum” ingredients can be found in foods EVERYWHERE!

Breads, salad dressings, popsicles, sorbets, dips, mayonnaise, packaged deli meats, sweet baked goods, tortillas, sour cream, yogurt, ice crème, milk shakes (especially fast food), soft drinks, soy, almond, coconut or hazel milk!

Now we all remember those potato chips years ago that had drastically reduced calories?  But in some cases also caused drastic results and would send people running to the bathroom!  The same thing can occur with some of these gums, especially people who already have gastrointestinal issues, these gums can cause cramps, diarrhea, gas or other adverse reactions.  Especially if you have Crohn’s, irritable bowel disease, ulcerative colitis or other related health issues.

Microbiomes are oral and intestinal. And if you think of it, your mouth and what goes in it leads straight to your intestinal tract.  But how do you know? What are the signs and symptoms???

Nausea            Vomiting                  Bloating                  Cramping

Diarrhea         Skin Problems         Malabsorption      Weight gain

Hair loss         Inflammation          Constant Sicknesses    Gas

Abdominal Pain     Dark Circles Under the Eyes
